A preprint took published claims about which cells change in disease, went back to the same people, and counted the cells by an independent method: a large share of the claims reversed, and the field's own benchmark ranking turned out to say almost nothing about which methods reverse. At ESMO, the first phase 3 of a cancer vaccine manufactured separately for each patient from their own tumour sequence cut recurrence or death in resected melanoma, with the benefit appearing only after six months and the first dose taking two months to make. In the same sessions, tumour DNA in blood after surgery sorted patients more sharply than the drug they received, while a trial that acted on serial blood DNA showed no benefit. A Chinese lab announced a model within a few points of the closed frontier and promised the weights by early November. A sixteen-billion-parameter model took plain descriptions of what a protein should do and returned sequences that worked in the flask, enzymes included. A synthetic organelle built from three parts recorded a human cell's transcriptome and held the record for days after the stimulus was washed away. A model of single-cell dynamics named three factors that would rescue a mutant immune phenotype, and all three rescued it in live mice. Google's blind-sweep ultrasound, run on a phone by staff with no sonography training, matched expert sonographers for gestational age at a Nairobi site the model had never seen. The World Health Organization's African regional office counts nearly a million trained health workers without a job, in a region that has under half the workforce it needs; imaging staff and laboratory technicians are among the cadres most often unemployed. A transformer pretrained on gene-essentiality scores now reads an ordinary transcriptome and returns an inferred vulnerability profile, so the expensive screen is needed for training and not at the moment of use. A review of virtual cells published the same day reports that independent benchmarks find scale alone does not buy generalisation outside the training distribution. A model that predicts antibiotic resistance from routine hospital mass spectra does worse than fail at a second hospital: it attaches resistant isolates to the wrong neighbours and carries the wrong prior with them. A chemical-biology paper names a failure mode of structure prediction and gives it a word: models place ligands where the training data already were. Two other fields published the same complaint about units on the same day, one for nuclear mechanics, one for sleep trackers. In an English assessment unit, a deterioration score was computed without the oxygen a patient was receiving and without the confusion she had developed. A nanopore workflow in Sheffield put a price on the small laboratory: cost-neutral at nine samples per run.
